GEORGE BRUNNHOELZL III SERVES NOTICE WITH STRONG RUN AT HICKORY
The Modified World Had Better Look Out – GB III Is Here To Stay
In 2007, Brunnhoelzl decided to come back to the Modified world after a stint with the full-fendered cars in the Pro Cup Series. With strong runs and early season success, Brunnhoelzl showed he still had what it took to drive the wide-tire beasts.
Sunday he continued showing his impressive skills by racing to the front in the ASA Modified Series race at Hickory Motor Speedway (NC), serving notice he was back for the attack in the Mod realm.
Brunnhoelzl and the team started their weekend success by testing at the track a few days before the race.
“The test went real well,” said Brunnhoelzl. “We tried some new stuff on the car. We had been lacking in the second half of the race, so we came here yesterday to test on old tires. The car was working pretty well on the old tires. We knew we would be sacrificing a little bit in qualifying and the start of the race but halfway through the race we would be good.”
After qualifying 12th for the race, Brunnhoelzl used patience to reel in the leaders, and before the halfway point, he was the man to beat.
“We came up to the front by lap 60 or so and took the lead for awhile. We had a real good car. We dropped back to second and we were just riding, trying to save our stuff.
“In the ASA Modified series, you start on four new sticker tires and can change one tire during the race. At a track like this, the pavement is very old and worn out. We knew everyone was going to take advantage of the tire they give you, so we came in and put a tire on.
“After putting the tire on, we set sail. The car was great, just awesome. We were running second and had our oil cooler break.”
The strong run had Brunnhoelzl smiling after the race, putting the competition on notice to step up their game, or they were going to have to settle for second best.
“We have done a lot of work the last few weeks since the NASCAR series has been off,” added Brunnhoelzl. “We did a lot of changes to the car and now the car feels right. I am looking forward to going to another race. A win is definitely coming.”
