Brunnhoelzl Brings It Home Eighth At Southern National Raceway Park
The NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour made their first stop Saturday at Southern National Raceway Park (Kenly, NC) since the track got a fresh coat of asphalt earlier in the year. George Brunnhoelzl, III was ready to see what he could do on the new surface. After a struggle during practice, Brunnhoelzl was strong during the start of the race until fading late to an eighth-place finish.
“We struggled all day in practice,” said Brunnhoelzl. “We went through and changed the carburetor and changed the ignition boxes and got that figured out. By that time there wasn’t much practice left, so we did what we could. Before qualifying we made some pretty extensive changes to it and hoped for the best.
“We had a good car at the start. I was a little free on entry. I was trying to baby it, but I ended up getting too loose on entry and ended up sliding. Once you are loose getting in the rest of the corner is junk.”
Despite not quite having the run he wanted, Brunnhoelzl was still positive on what he accomplished in a short time, and looked forward to coming back and race on the newly paved Southern National.
“I have run here before. You had to drive it a little bit different. You get in the gas pretty early because of the banking. With the new pavement it allowed you to get in the gas that much earlier. It is a fun track and I am looking forward to running here again next year, just with a better car.”
Next up for Brunnhoelzl is the NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour race at Caraway Speedway (NC) on September 22nd.
