It was one of those cases where the finish of the Whelen Made In America 300 NASCAR Whelen Modified event at Martinsville Speedway did not show the true outcome of how well George Brunnhoelzl III ran.
After taking his first career Southern Modified Tour win a few weeks back, it has been nothing but strong performances from the North Carolina youngster. Martinsville was no exception as Brunnhoelzl ran in the top five all day long on September 20th before mechanical problems sent him back-pedaling through the field for a 17th place finish.
“First half, the car was great,” said Brunnhoelzl. “We were just biding our time and seeing what the car would do with these tires. We tried to learn from that so we could move up in the next 150 laps. The first half of the race was real clean on our part. We broke a spring in the carburetor after halfway. I had to use up all the brakes to get the car slowed down in the corners.”
Brunnhoelzl did run strong and was happy about his performance in front of the Martinsville crowd. He did manage to post a good enough finish to maintain his top 10 points position in the Southern Modified standings.

“It feels good to run with the North cars,” added Brunnhoelzl, referring to the combination event at Martinsville between the Southern Mod Tour and the Northern Mod Tour contingents.
“We only get one chance to show it. It’s disappointing not to finish the way we ran all day. We’ll move on and go to the next one.”
Brunnhoelzl will be back in action on September 27th at Caraway Speedway in Sophia, North Carolina.
