Brunnhoelzl Sets Track Record in WSMT Event at Caraway Speedway
GBIII Maintains Early-Season Points Lead After Another Strong Performance
The 2009 NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour season might just be George Brunnhoelzl III's year to shine. In the first race of the season at Concord Speedway (NC), GBIII started from the back due to swapping out the engine, driving to a third-place finish. In the second season event at South Boston Speedway (VA), Brunnhoelzl snagged the fast qualifier award en route to finishing second, taking over the points lead.
In the third race of the season this past weekend at Caraway Speedway (NC), Brunnhoelzl continued his strong early-season run by setting fast time for the second week in a row, which was a new track record, and being the racer to beat throughout the event until a late-race incident cost him a chance at the victory.
"We were real good right off the truck in practice," said Brunnhoelzl. "We had a good qualifying run and sat on the pole with a new qualifying record.
"Everything went real good in the race. We had a real good car. I just spun the tires on one of the last restarts and Teddy (Christopher) and (Brian) Loftin got by me. I got back by Loftin, and I was going under Teddy for the lead and I spun."
Even though the 11th-place finish wasn't what he wanted or where many feel he should have finished, Brunnhoelzl still maintained the series' points lead heading into this weekend's fourth event in Braselton, Georgia, and is upbeat about going for another victory.
"We are just going to go out there and try to win. We have a good car and it just got away from us this week, so we are going to try and go after another one."
The Lanier 150 NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour event will take place on Saturday, April 18th.
