George Brunnhoelzl III Alright After Rough Night at Orange County
Big Wreck Ends Night for 2009 Southern Modified Champion
George Brunnhoelzl III has very little to prove after winning the 2009 NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Championship. But Brunnhoelzl would still love to show the Northern Modified guys that he means business by winning one of the big open Modified shows like the North South Shootout or the Frost Bite Modified Winter Nationals at Orange County Speedway (NC).
Brunnhoelzl was at Orange County for the Frost Bite race this past weekend, but the thrill of going for a win changed to concern after Brunnhoelzl and fellow competitors Jason Myers and Matt Hirschman would up on top of each other in wild wreck on lap seven. The wreck left Brunnhoelzl placed 15th in the final rundown.
“It was way early in the race and people were beating and banging,” said Brunnhoelzl. “The sparks were starting to fly when Matt Hirschman got turned up into the wall. I got turned into the wall and I thought we were going to be ok after that, but I got hit in the rear and we went up on our side as did Hirschman -so it was pretty wild.”
After a wild ride on his side the biggest worry for any driver was lurking in the air after the wreck stopped.
“You want to take a second and make sure you’re ok and figure out what’s up and what’s down,” added Brunnhoelzl. “After that I could smell fuel leaking so I was pretty quick on getting out and luckily for all of us, we were all ok.”
Brunnhoelzl said that his car is still in pretty good shape chassis wise and they will further evaluate the car when it gets back to the shop. The next race for Brunnhoelzl will be at Thompson Int’l Speedway (CT) on April 11th for The Icebreaker, which kicks off the 2010 NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour season.
