Brunnhoelzl Comes Out on Top in NWSMT at Thompson
GBIII Brings Home Fourth in 50-lap UNOH Showdown
George Brunnhoelzl III and his Ideal Racing #09 Whelen Southern Modified team traveled to Thompson, Connecticut this weekend for a duo of special events where they brought home a win and a top-five finish while they gain momentum in their championship journey.
Brunnhoelzl brought home the checkers in Sunday’s NWSMT Southern Thompson 125 against some of the toughest Modified drivers in the country and amid a bit of controversy. Brunnhoelzl was awarded the lead and would take it to victory lane after the then-leader Steve Masse was black flagged for jumping a restart with only a few laps remaining.
“The bottom line is we got the win,” said Brunnhoelzl. “I hate it for the other guys because they did have a good car. He (Masse) led a bunch of laps but I believe we had a better car in the long run than what he did because we had started catching him. But it’s
one of those deals with NASCAR, you’ve got to play by their rules, it’s their game.”
Going into the final stretch of the WSMT season, Brunnhoelzl hopes the win will provide the momentum he needs to make a championship run.
“This win definitely picks us up for the final races,” said Brunnhoelzl. “I mean we started off really strong and we had good runs, just not the dominance or the performance we wanted early in the season. So it definitely helps to come out here and get a victory. And then to run top-five in this bonus race is really cool. NASCAR, Whelen, UNOH, those guys putting this on – it’s unbelievable, can’t wait to do it again next year.”
The next event for Brunnhoelzl and the Whelen Southern Modified Tour will be Saturday night, September 18th at Caraway Speedway in Asheboro, NC.
